How to Win at Rock Paper Scissors

Colorful Picture of Rock, Paper, Scissors

Rock, Paper, Scissors is a fun game and a way to decide things like who sits in the front seat or who gets the last piece of gum. Most people think that the outcome is completely random, but there are some strategies that will help your chances.

Rules of Rock, Paper, Scissors Game

1. Always play “Paper” first. Players tend to lead with rock, so paper is a great first move. (If your opponent tries the same thing it will at least be a tie.)

2. Beat the copycats. A lot of players switch to the object that just beat them. You can kind of trick them into doing the one you just did (sometimes) by shouting, “Paper wins!” when you defeat their rock. Then throw scissors on the next time.

3. Watch for doubles. People usually don’t throw the same thing three times in a row.

  • If they play scissors twice, your next move should be paper (it will cover rock and if they choose paper too you will at least tie).
  • If they do rock twice then you do scissors on the third one because they will usually do paper (you win) or scissor (you tie).
  • If they do paper twice then you choose rock. They usually do scissors (they lose) or rock (tie).

Also, try to play fast so they have less time to think and instead fall into patterns.

4. Have fun. Remember, it is a game so have fun! Don’t worry to much about strategy or winning.
