Most Venomous Land Snakes

Cute SnakeI was reading this about the serpant in the Garden of Eden. It got me to thinking about snakes and I was wondering what the most venomous snakes in the world are.

Now, let me say quickly for snake lovers (or snake haters) that this list of top ten venomous snakes is only a list of the most venomous land snakes. There are several sea snakes that are even more venomous sea snakes but this list will only be the top ten most venomous land snakes.




Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made.

10. Jarararcussu ( Bothrops Jarararcussu )

Snake’s Description: Jarararcussu has a light or dark greenish colour on upper body and faint yellow colour at bottom. Jarararcussus are found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay. A single bite has enough venom to kill 32 people.


9. Tiger Snake (Notechis Scutatus)

Snake’s Description: Tiger Snakes are olive to dark brown on top with yellowish or olive belly and crossbands. Tiger Snakes are found in Australia, Tasmania, Bass Strait islands and New Guinea. It is very common and bites many humans in Australia.



8. Multibanded krait (Bungarus Multicinctus)

Snake’s Description: Multibanded Krait is black or bluish-black with narrow white bands. Multibanded Kraits are not “sea snakes” but are often found in aquatic areas hunting for fish, frogs or other snakes. They are now rare in wild.

ellow-Jawed Tommygoffs have variable coloration, from gray to olive, brown or reddish, with dark triangles edged with light scales. Triangles are narrow at the top and wide at the bottom.
Yellow-Jawed Tommygoff are grouchy and may strike with little provocation. Heat-seeking fangs help it strike accurately even in the dark. This highly poisonous snake is responsible for a high death rate for people who are bitten. They can have up to 60 babies. They are found in Southern Mexico, throughout Central and South America.

Snake’s Description: The Black Mamba is uniformly olive to black. Despite the name this snake is actually brownish-gray but its mouth has a black internal lining and that’s why it is named Black Mamba. There is also another specie of Mamba called Green Mamba. This is Africa’s most feared poisonous snake because it is highly toxic and very aggressive. Black Mamba’s bite is always 100% fatal if anti-venom is not administered quickly.

What is even worse Black Mamba is the fastest land snake in the world, reaching top speeds of 10-12 miles per hour in short bursts.

Black Mambas are found in African savannas and open woodlands. Black Mamba’s habitat varies from farmlands to dense rain forests. It is also commonly found around human settlements.


5. Russell’s Viper (Vipera Russellii)

Snake’s Description: Russell Viper has a light brown body with three rows of dark brown or black splotches bordered with white or yellow extending its entire length. Russell Viper is abundant over its entire range. It is responsible for more human fatalities than any other venomous snake.

Russell Vipers are found in Sri Lanka, Southern China, India, Malaysian Peninsula, Java, Sumatra, Borneo and surrounding islands.



4. King Cobra (Ophiophagus Hannah)

Snake’s Description: King Cobra is uniformly olive, brown or green in colour with rings like
cross bands of black.
Although King Cobra is the largest venomous snake in the world it causes relatively few bites of humans. It feeds exclusively on harmless species of other snakes. King Cobras are found in Thailand, Southern China, Malaysia Peninsula, Southern India and Philippines.


3. Philippine Cobra ( Naja Naja Philippinensis )

Snake’s Description: Philippine Cobra is a relatively small stocky brown snake. Philippine Cobras are recognized by the hoods that they flare when angry or disturbed; the hoods are created by the extension of the ribs behind the cobras’ heads. Philippine Cobras are famous for their use by snake charmers because they respond well to visual cues. Philippine Cobras are found in Philippine Islands.


3. Krait ( Bungarus Caeruleus )

Snake’s Description: Krait is Black or bluish-black in colour with white narrow crossbands and a narrow head. Kraits are found only in Asia. It is 15 times more deadly than any common cobra. It is active at night and relatively passive during the day. The krait has a tendency to seek shelter in sleeping bags, boots and tents. Their habitat include open fields, human settlements and dense jungle in India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Snake’s Description: Generally Taipans are uniformly olive or dark brown, the head is somewhat darker brown. If bitten maximum survival time recorded after Taipan’s bite is not more than one hour.

Taipan has four major sub-species:

  • Western or Inland Taipan ( Oxyuranus Microlepidotus ) or ( Fierce Snake ) are found in Central Australia
  • Papuan Taipan ( Oxyuranus s. canni ) are found in New Guinea
  • Common or Coastal Taipan ( Oxyuranus Scutellatus ) are found in Northern Australia and Southern New Guinea
  • Central Ranges Taipan ( Oxyuranus Temporalis )

Its bite can have 110mg. of venom.  Just few mg of Inland Taipan’s venom is enough to kill over 100 people or 250,000 mice.
