This is weird. Did you know that there was a really tall Philistine who was unusual? But, it’s not Goliath.

You probably remember that the Israelites were always fighting against the Philistines. David killed Goliath in the most famous battle. What you may not know is that there were other really big, really mean guys whom the Israelites fought.

How would you like to have to fight a giant guy? David and his mighty men were brave. There were four sons of a really huge guy. David’s men had to fight all four of these over-sized brothers.

Now that is weird and gross.

In still another battle, which took place at Gath, there was a huge man with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot—twenty-four in all. He also was descended from Rapha. When he taunted Israel, Jonathan son of Shimea, David’s brother, killed him.

One of the best tools for Bible study while you are online is Biblegateway.com

How to use Biblegateway.com:

1. Click on the link for Biblegateway.com.
2. Look for the box called “Quick Search”.
3. In that box, type the name of a Bible book and chapter that you want to read. For example, you could type: John 1 or John 2, etc.
4. You can also look for a specific topic like “Jesus” or “Prophet”
5. Click on the “Search the Bible” button or press your Enter or Return key.

You can use these steps to read, online, all books and chapters of the Bible. You can also select which English translation you wish to read. The Bible Gateway site offers several English translations, including New International Version, King James Version, Young’s Literal Translation, etc. The site also offers translations into other languages.

Cut Off Their Thumbs and Big Toes

Adoni-Bezek was a Canaanite king in the book of Judges in the Old Testament.

He was a great warrior and had captured seventy kings. He cut off their thumbs and big toes.

That seems kind of weird. Why would he do that?

When an archer draws a bow he uses his fingers and thumb. With no thumb he could not shoot his arrow straight.

When a warrior loses his big toe he has trouble balancing and running.

By cutting off the other kings thumbs and toes Adoni-Bezek disgraced them because they could not fight any more.

Also, Adoni-Bezek made the seventy kings eat scraps of food from under his table (like a dog or some other type of pet).

By doing those things Adoni-Bezek was saying “I’m the best king. I have disgraced seventy kings and now they are like pet dogs to me.”

What Adoni-Bezek did not know is that God was the only true king. God gave Adoni-Bezek into the hands of Judah.

When Judah attacked, the LORD gave the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek. It was there that they found Adoni-Bezek and fought against him, putting to rout the Canaanites and Perizzites. Adoni-Bezek fled, but they chased him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.

Then Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have picked up scraps under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them.” They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.
