Sharks Have a Great Sense of Smell

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

Shark

God gave sharks a keen sense of smell. Some kinds of sharks can smell as little as one drop of blood if it was in 1,000,000 drops of seawater (that’s over 13.2 gallons about 50 liters).

A big kitchen trash can holds about 13 gallons or a little less than 50 liters. Imagine one drop in a whole kitchen trash can filled with seawater.

Sharks are also attracted to the chemicals found in the intestines of many species of fish. Some species, such as nurse sharks, have external barbels (a slender, whisker like feeling organ) near the mouth that greatly increase their ability to sense prey.

Sharks generally rely on their superior sense of smell to find prey, but at closer range they also sense movement in the water, and even use their senses to detect electrical fields created by prey.

God really made sharks cool. Here is a cool way to get just a small idea of just how sensitive a shark’s sense of smell is. Of course, our nose can not even get close to the sensitivity of a shark’s but this fun experiment will give you an idea.

Make a Pretend Dragon Egg

Dragon EggDragon Eggs?

Out of the misty, dark, murky recesses of the past come dragon eggs.

Okay, these are not real dragon eggs. In fact, dragons are not even real. But these are a fun project that you can make at home.

It’s really fairly easy to make but it will definitely be a project for adults and kids to work on together. This is not one just for kids.

This idea comes from someone named “Kaptin Scarlet.” I tried to go to his website but the site was down so I’m not going to put a link here.

You will start with egg blowing and then instead of just painting the blown egg, make it in to a fantastic looking dragon’s egg in a few minutes with a bit of hot melt glue gun glue and some paint.

That’s it, it couldn’t really be simpler than that! Here are the complete instructions.

Soil Experiment Growing Pinto Beans

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Pinto Bean to Grow for ExperiementWhen God created the world He made everything just right.

Think about these things:

If Earth were just a little closer to the sun we would burn up and water would vaporize

If the earth did not tilt on its axis there would not be seasons and things could not grow.

If there were just a little more of certain gases or a little less of others in our atmosphere we could not breath.

If our soil had just a little more or a little less of some chemicals plants could not grow.

This project (adapted from TryScience.org) will show what would happen if there was just a little more salt in soil. (more…)

Be Cool about Fire Safety

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

The U.S. Fire Administration for Kids

Each year in the United States an estimated 2,800 children age 14 or younger are injured and 850 killed in residential fires. Of these children, over 40 percent are under the age of five, 70 percent are under the age of 10. Because the majority of fire casualties occur in children under the age of 10, the U.S. Fire Administration for Kids is targeted towards that age group. And we want to help them in their goal of preventing injuries and death to children due to fire.

ChurchFun.com wants to help by presenting their great information here for our readers.

The goals of U.S. Fire Administration Kids are to:

  1. Increase the level of individual concern and awareness of children’s vulnerability to fire.
  2. Educate and inform the U.S. population about how personal responsibility and action is key to preventing fires and fire-related casualties.
  3. Provide a timely, coordinated and easy-to-access source of information about how individuals can prevent fires and fire-related casualties.

This post will give you short lessons about fire escape planning, smoke alarms and general home fire safety. It is recommended that an adult guide children through the lessons.

Each lesson is followed by a brief five-question quiz to test children’s knowledge of the subject after they have worked through the lesson.

Finally, through a 10-question quiz, children will have the opportunity to earn a Jr. Fire Marshal certificate signed by the Assistant Administrator, U.S. Fire Administration.
